CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Garen Crownguard
Character Canon: League of Legends

History: No witty today.

AU History: Born first child to Aldert and Lilia Crownguard, Garen was shouldered with most of the responsibility of maintaining the family's presence in Union when he came of age. This was something he did without question though it is questionable in and of itself whether he enjoyed the thought of it growing up. Heavily tutored privately so that he could be indoctrinated with all the ideals needed to uphold the Crownguard name, Garen has been shaped into a man that serves justice and truth unflinchingly. As such, admittedly, there is a point that he does feel an amount of regret on, being that he wasn't able to be quite as much of a presence in his sister's life as he realized that he would have liked. At least with his cousin Ky he managed to maintain some semblance of relation through their mutual work and something akin to a mentorship, though if pressed, Garen would easily count Ky as an equal rather than a student as he has proven himself time and again with capable leadership.

Not having the problems that his sister Luxanna has had to deal with, Garen has shown himself to be ethical and with a strong sense of Noblesse Oblige, dedicating himself to serving Union and leading through example within the Swords of the Savior. As such he has several times demonstrated his resolve to protecting Union during the few quiet rumbles have occurred throughout his service.

Having previously been a part of a secret mission outside Union, he has since returned. Upon his return and having seen the Swords in a state of minor disarray save for Ky and Hans' leadership and he has had to step in and clean up the ranks once more. A notable example of these was being saddled with the fon Fabre twins, and they proved almost too much for him to handle, allowing Hans to take over Luke's watch while Asch continued to be the rough beat-walker. Their dreams of glory aside, he did work closely with several new members to help them make a good start, especially during key skirmishes. When Union collectively received a distress call, he was one of the first few to answer the call, sweeping the swords into activity and greeting every new member that had joined, and coordinating them into groups that appealed to their strengths. Garen has helped to lead the Swords to achieve a decisive victory again Gigas and gain Union an ally of sorts in Caldera, though since that time he has opted to allow his cousin and the rest of the Swords to take the reins while he trained himself, as well as dealt with the internal conflict in his family that he must now wed a noble female as he shouldered the burden of continuing the family name and honor to allow his dear sister to live her life as she chooses, something that he felt is only fair as he was allow to pursue his dream of being a Sword of the Savior while she was saddled with etiquette lessons and groomed specifically to wed another noble family to improve the Crownguard's status.

So he must juggle work and personal life for the first time in years.

Canon Personality: Garen is pretty polarizing, or at least portrayed that way by all mentioning of him, and how he conducts himself on the Fields of Justice. He seems a big proponent of Order and Justice as opposed to Might makes Right. Mentioned several times, is that he likes to lead by example in an ethical and moral sense.

He's also reputed to be quite intelligent as a General of the Demacian Military, leader of the Dauntless Vanguard, and is very noted for being one of Demacia's heroes that haven't fallen in battle with it's rival Noxus. It can be attested to his will to live and serve his country, as well as an indoctrinated black and white morality that comes from military.

For him, gray areas do exist, but they are very few and far between as a result of Demacia's strict moral code that pursues truth and order. As such depending on one's perspective he can seem very upstanding or borderline cruel.

Thankfully this is tempered by a sense of humor, a love of family, and perhaps, arguably finding something to pursue off the battlefield for once. Obvious weaknesses to Garen are that Demacia's harsh indoctrination makes it hard to be flexible if a situation should ever arise that the moral code wouldn't be serving it's purpose. Also it can be argued that he may be just a little to protective of his family at times.

AU Deviation: Well, since he's not part of a country at war, perhaps a less unyielding view of the world. Pretty much everything's the same, just slightly less extremist as he hasn't been constantly sent on campaigns.

As such, Garen may feel some burden from what his family has pushed on him to undertake, even if he'll rarely show it. He also believes, perhaps incorrectly in Union despite it's extreme reluctance to move forward with the times. Even if he didn't believe in it, his sense of duty would oblige him to protect it, vouch for it, and therefore instead of allowing a moral dilemma to form, Garen has managed to put his faith in the Council and trust that the Nobility will lead their civilization on through the ages to come.

On a sense of family, as mentioned in his history, Garen does have some regrets, as all the work put into shaping him took up a great deal of his time, and made it hard to always be there, and even now with him out of the city on his mission his thoughts have turned homeward often on his sister and cousin. He's struggling with how to approach it, but wants to try reconciling with Lux, even if she feels he did no harm because he wants to the family proud; but not at the risk of abandoning those close to him, at this time being Lux and Ky. Romance is also an area which he suffers with heavily. There are rumors of Garen having relationships, but that is sadly all they are. He can have a strong rapport with females but that is hardly a romance. The idea of marrying seems almost foreign to him; a necessary duty, but he had expected such a duty to not land in his hands. As such his flirting ability is weak and accidental at best, and akin to a brush off at worst, which while he isn't entirely aware has cost him many an admirer. A painful cost especially now that he will have to run the courting circuit, or at least make the attempt.

Canon Abilities: Garen is very skilled with a sword and quite strong, as in his joke animation he'll do vertical pushups.

Perseverance: Garen's will to fight on is so strong that if he isn't damaged for a set amount of time, he will regenerate health naturally so he can fight on.

Decisive Strike: If he's been slowed for any reason, Garen can shrug it off every so often with a fixed lapse between times and gain a burst of speed to allow him to close the distance and deliver a stronger strike that can silence a spellcaster temporarily.

Courage: During a prolonged engagement, Garen can intuitively learn how to better defend himself against attacks both magical and physical, presumably due to his extensive Military career. When at his peak, he can also focus enough to reduce effects that would slow or disable him temporarily.

SPINTOWINJudgement: Arguably more to intimidate with his physicality, but Garen will spin his greatsword almost as if he were a whirling top of death and literally mow down enemies that make the mistake of not moving out of his way.

Demacian Justice: A trick of the mind. It is the most demanding and powerful strike that Garen can muster, so powerful it can instill a terrifying image of blade of light tumbling from the sky to fell his foes. The intensity it projects is very intimidating, and the rumors of the blade are only enhanced by the fact that Garen's Justice is more powerful the weaker his foe is. However it is as mentioned, a trick of the mind as Garen is not a spell caster.

Enlightened Abilities: Garen's Typing will be Steel/Fighting, and his ability will be Master of Training to reflect his discipline as a soldier.

His appearance will not change greatly throughout his evolutionary periods if at all. He might become more muscular, though not grotesquely so. Rather his Enlightenment will manifest through his sword skill by way of Fighting Type prowess and how hard to damage he becomes through the Steel Type's notoriously strong defense. Due to his attachment to his sword, and as he evolves, more and more of the Fighting Type moves will be preformed with his sword as it seems more and more like a natural part of his body, with things like Rolling Kick serving for Judgement, etc. Eventually once he reaches his 2nd evolution however, he will be able to temporarily manifest armor around himself or enhance his armor if he is already wearing it by using Iron Defense. He will also be able to use Sacred Sword upon reaching his 2nd evolution.

Starter Pokémon: Honedge and Magnemite

Notes/Special Considerations: A sword that will deal Steel Type damage, a large one. Like massive. (Okay not really. Garen already possibly overcompensates enough). Eventually I would like permission to start a Player Plot to either imbue this sword, or have a new one made with the Psychic Type added on to project the sword of light falling from the sky in a foe's mind to do Demacian Justice.

SAMPLES

First-Person:

What do you feel your role in Union is?
"To serve it faithfully and protect our way of life so it endures." No problems answering this one at all.

What do you seek for humanity’s future?
"That we always take the lessons of the Savior to heart so we never commit the same mistakes as in the past." Again, this isn't a hard question for the knight to answer.

To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
"We do what we must." A pause. "And I would pursue all the proper channels for permission." The darker side that he doesn't answer is, that if he never received permission, he likely would leave them. To sacrifice many for a few seems unthinkable to him.

What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?
"Any. We all do our part to help each other and no one should ever feel unimportant." Undoubtedly true in his him.

Third-Person:
What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
"It is an inspiration to me. That even from the depths of despair, we can rise up and compromise when we must. For me it means that no one is incapable of redemption, but they must want it--genuinely want it."

What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
"A sense of order, neatness, manners, mutual respect." This not withstanding whether he actually likes someone or not; he can respect them and mean it regardless.

What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
"To ensure Union prospers." In a rare moment of lying, Garen might actually consider his personal greatest duty to be ensuring Lux's happiness.

What strengths make you most qualified for your role within Union?
"The teachings and blessings of my family, the resolve of the Swords of the Savior, and the wisdom of the Council."

In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.
"Betrayal. The knife of treachery cuts too deeply to ignore."

No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?
"Type, I do not care about, what I would like however is something that allows me to protect what I must." His family, and Union, the two most important things to him.
